How does online play work?
Online multiplayer uses Steam Matchmaking, so Steam needs to be running. It's been tested to work on both Windows and GNU+Linux.

I added the game to Steam as a shortcut and now the controller is broken.
Launch the game, press the PS/guide button on your controller, then set steam input to enabled. Yes, enabled, not disabled! You might have to restart the game afterwards.
Alternatively you can delete steam_api64.dll if you don't care about playing online.

The controller isn't working while steam is open even though it's not a shortcut!
Steam -> Settings -> Controller -> Advanced -> Desktop Layout -> Disabled
